How to Experience the Canadian Rockies Like a Local

Canadian Rockies, British Columbia and Alberta

Since I was a child, I have been exploring the lush wild valleys, emerald blue lakes and craggy peaks of the Canadian Rockies. More specifically the parks of Banff, Jasper, Kananaskis, and Yoho. After countless years bushwhacking through rough trails, camping and photographing wildlife I feel I might just be able to say “I know” a bit about these epic mountains and can call myself a local to the region. Although there is so much more to see outside of the words I write in this post, this can be a definitive guide for those who are new to the Canadian Rockies and want to experience as much as they can. So, get ready for one of my most favorite places on earth, my home, the Canadian Rockies!

Kayaking Gwaii Haanas National Park, Canada

Gwaii Haanas National Park, British Columbia, Canada

What does it do to one to leave modern civilization and the modern comforts of home behind? To delve deep into the natural world? To get lost both physically and within one’s own consciousness? Here I am, someone who has always avoided this kind of “hippy crap” yet writing about this, knowing that I have found a place to surround myself with pure, natural beauty. A place to reset myself and make me feel human again. Paddling through Gwaii Haanas was a transformative experience, a cleansing of the soul, whatever that means. Floating amongst a sea of life, passing by mystical, dark forests and towering mountains covered in mist makes for a legendary setting. This is my story of a journey into one of planet Earth’s hidden paradises. This is the ancient land of the Haida: Gwaii Haanas National Park, Canada.

Travel Back in Time, a Guide to Havana – Cuba

Havana, Cuba

From the moment I landed and hit the streets of Havana I felt it. I am not sure whether it’s the crumbly colonial architecture seemingly frozen in time, the constant rumba music causing an infectious dance amongst the locals, or simply just the way life seems to slow down and relax. A trip to Havana is a trip back in time, a time where neon 50’s styled everything is the norm, where people still gathered on the streets together to eat and drink without the distraction of the modern world. There is no place like it, Havana Cuba is just as addictive as it is beautiful and during any trip here you will feel the feeling I did as I walked these streets filled with life. The very feeling where you will say to yourself, I will never be the same! Welcome to one of the greatest cities on earth, Havana, Cuba.

Mexico’s Cultural Heart – Oaxaca

Oaxaca, Mexico

The streets are full of life, everywhere you look you see vibrant colours, smokey markets, and people as unique as the land they call home. Oaxaca is where travellers come to get a taste of the real Mexico, the Mexico you won’t find at one of the countries many coastal resorts. There’s no Senior Frogs or beach discos, instead, you will find markets teeming with Mexican food you probably have not heard of and venues playing classic tunes while locals sip on Mezcal. This is the Mexico that will get under your skin, this is Oaxaca.
