When the day is over lockers are provided for you to store your skis as well as evening activities to keep you busy. My favorite evening event was cooking smore’s over the fire, tobogganing and snow shoeing! My favorite reason to stay at the lodge is meeting fellow skiers and getting up early to catch the very first chair lift!

The Learning Process

Step one of the learning process is to get equipped, you will need ski’s boots, poles, goggles, a helmet and of course warm clothing. Thankfully, the resort does offer rentals for those of us missing the required equipment, including children’s sizes! Step two is lessons, I was fortunate enough to have access to two days of private classes.

I HIGHLY recommend the private lessons as my instructor, Mealis, was a very experienced and enthusiastic instructor who not only showed me the basics within the first few hours but gave me practical tips that would allow me to progress quickly.

By the end of the second day I was completing blue runs! That being said, skiing is NOT a race and everyone will learn at different paces. Make sure you enjoy the process of learning and retain as much as you can. My instructor said many times, do not be afraid to ask questions or request feedback.

My top 5 memories at Sunshine Village

  • 1. Learning to Ski – I had a great time with my instructor, she is not only very well versed in skiing but she was a knowledgeable instructor that understood how to train someone from the ground up. By the second day I felt that I had made a new friend as well as a good understanding how to navigate the many ski areas within the resort. I know I will be utilizing these skills throughout my travels as well as in my own backyard.
  • 2. Soaking in the outdoor hot tub – Every night after a long day of skiing and using muscles I didn’t even know I had I loved relaxing in the Sunshine Mountain Lodge hot tub. Watching the sun set over the Rockies from the warmth of the water as snow falls from the ski was such a magical experience.
  • 3. Evening s’mores by the fire – I loved the nostalgia of roasting marshmallows to perfection (or burning them to a crisp if you’re like me). Not to mention the satisfaction of smooshing them between chocolate and two pieces of graham crackers to create the most beautiful dessert’s of the camping world. While I do not have kids I did enjoy seeing all their smiling faces covered in chocolate as their parents chase them around to prevent them from creating a sticky marshmallow mess on their clothes. This was such a fun and simple night time event.

4. Tobogganing in Sunshine Village – I am in my 30’s and the thought of flinging my body down a hill at high speed, with very little control over what direction I go was a daunting thought. After watching a few people go down the hill I decided It was now or never, and all the memories flooded back. We did not have the luxury padded toboggan made of wood that the lodge provided growing up, but I can still remember whizzing down hills on old pizza boxes. This hill was much bigger and much better maintained so I excited flew down that hill over and over until the sun started to go down.
